Oak & Iron Apothecary™: Herbal Tea Formulation
Occasional support for bowel regularity
Safe Harbor Passage Tea is a short-term herbal tea designed to support bowel motility when stools feel sluggish, with added support for gas comfort and gentle soothing of the gastrointestinal lining.
This formula is PRN-only. It is not a daily wellness tea, a cleanse, or a long-term bowel program. Every ingredient, dose choice, and limitation reflects that boundary.
This herbal tea is designed for adults who occasionally experience:
Sluggish or delayed bowel movements
A “backed up” feeling with gas or bloating
Mild cramping or irritation that makes bowel movements uncomfortable
This product provides a temporary nudge, not ongoing management.
Gentle motility support
A low dose of senna provides a short-term stimulant effect on the colon, helping initiate a bowel movement when motility is sluggish.
This is the primary driver of the formula and the reason this tea is strictly PRN-only.
2. Gas reduction and transit comfort
Carminative herbs are included to help reduce the sensation of gas and bloating that often accompanies delayed transit.
This supports comfort rather than forcing movement.
3. Cramp buffering and mucosal support
Demulcent herbs help soothe and buffer the GI lining, reducing irritation or cramping that can occur when stimulant herbs are used without support.
Senna (Senna alexandrina)
The primary motility driver. Senna has the strongest human evidence among herbal laxatives for increasing bowel movement frequency. In this formula, it is used conservatively and with strict duration limits.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
Included for carminative support and digestive comfort. Fennel helps reduce gas-related discomfort and also improves palatability without adding sweeteners.
Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)
Used as a gentle digestive comfort adjunct. While peppermint oil has stronger clinical evidence than leaf tea, the leaf form provides milder support appropriate for a PRN tea.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Supports upper-GI motility and digestive warmth. Ginger is included as a supportive adjunct, not as a primary laxative agent.
Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)
A demulcent herb traditionally used to soothe mild GI irritation. Marshmallow helps buffer cramping and discomfort associated with stimulant laxatives.
Bowel products tend to fail in one of two ways:
Too weak to work
Too aggressive to tolerate
This formula is designed to sit between those extremes.
We deliberately excluded ingredients that increase regulatory risk, electrolyte disturbance, or dependency, even if they are popular in commercial bowel blends. Every inclusion and exclusion was chosen to support effectiveness without encouraging overuse.
Use 1 level tablespoon (approximately 3 - 4 g) per 8- 10 oz hot water
Steep 10- 15 minutes
Strain and drink
If needed, you may drink a second cup only if:
You have no significant cramping, and
You have had no bowel movement, and
It has been at least 4- 6 hours since the first cup
Do not exceed 2 cups in 24 hours.
Effects are commonly noticed within 6- 12 hours after the final cup.
Frequency limits (Gentle Support)
May be used PRN up to 3 times per week if needed
Do not use daily as a routine
Do not use more than 7 days without clinician guidance
If you find yourself needing frequent use, this tea is not the right tool. Persistent constipation needs evaluation and a different plan.
This formula is grounded in published human research and traditional-use monographs.
